iPad Screen Repair – The Complicated Truth

iPad screen repairs are more complex than phone repairs. Here’s what most repair shops won’t tell you upfront:

Two Types of iPad Screens

Older iPads (iPad 2-6th gen, mini 1-3, Air 1-2): These have separate glass digitizer and LCD display. If just the glass is cracked and the display underneath works perfectly, we can do glass-only replacement (£75-120 depending on model).

Newer iPads (iPad 7th gen onwards, Air 3+, mini 4+, all Pro models): These have laminated screens where glass and LCD are permanently bonded at the factory. Even a tiny crack means replacing the entire display assembly (£150-450 depending on model). There’s no cheaper glass-only option.

Glass-Only vs Full Display – Which Do You Need?

We’ll examine your iPad and tell you honestly which repair you need.

If your iPad is an older model and only the glass is cracked with the display underneath perfect, glass-only repair saves you £50-150. But if the LCD shows any damage (black spots, lines, flickering, discoloration), you need full display replacement.

We don’t push expensive full display replacement when glass-only would work. But we also won’t attempt glass-only repair on a damaged LCD just to save you money upfront—you’d end up paying twice when it doesn’t work.

Common iPad Screen Problems We Fix

iPad Pro screen repairs are expensive. A 12.9″ iPad Pro screen can cost £300-450 for quality parts. We’ll be upfront about this. If your iPad Pro is several years old, we’ll honestly tell you if repair makes financial sense or if replacement is smarter.

iPad Battery Replacement

Battery dying quickly? iPad getting hot during normal use? Won’t hold charge overnight? Battery health showing “Service Recommended”?

iPad batteries last longer than iPhone batteries because iPads charge less frequently. But they still degrade. After 4-5 years of use, capacity drops significantly.

We replace iPad batteries on all models from iPad 2 onwards.

Common iPad Battery Problems

• Battery drains fast (dies in 3-4 hours of use instead of all day)
• Gets hot during charging or light use
• Won’t charge past a certain percentage
• iPad shuts down randomly even with battery showing charge remaining
• Swollen battery (back of iPad bulging or screen lifting)

Swollen batteries are dangerous. If your iPad’s screen is lifting or the back is bulging, stop using it immediately and bring it in. Swollen batteries can catch fire or explode. Don’t charge it, don’t use it, just bring it in safely.

Battery Replacement Costs

Battery replacement costs £60-120 depending on iPad model and size. Larger iPads (12.9″ Pro) have bigger, more expensive batteries than smaller models (mini, standard iPad).

iPad glue is aggressive. Battery replacement requires careful disassembly to avoid damaging other components. This is why it costs more than you’d think for “just a battery.”

iPad Charging Port Repair

Lightning port loose? Charges intermittently? Have to prop the cable with a book to get it charging? USB-C port (on newer models) not recognizing accessories?

iPad charging ports get heavy use—daily charging, connecting to keyboards, USB accessories, external displays (on Pro models). Pocket lint doesn’t apply to iPads, but the ports still wear out from repeated plug/unplug cycles.

We repair or replace iPad charging ports properly. Usually done same-day.

iPad Pro USB-C models: These should support Thunderbolt speeds, external displays, and fast charging. We ensure replacement ports maintain this functionality, not just basic charging.

Sometimes it’s just debris. We’ll clean it out for free if that’s the issue. If it needs actual replacement, we’ll quote the cost first.

iPad Home Button & Touch ID Repair

Home button not clicking? Touch ID fingerprint sensor not working? Button feels mushy or unresponsive?

This is tricky on iPads with Touch ID. The Touch ID sensor is paired to your specific iPad’s logic board for security. If we replace the home button, Touch ID will never work again—only the physical click function.

Options:

• If just the button mechanism is broken but Touch ID works, we can sometimes repair the button without replacing the sensor
• If Touch ID is already broken, we can replace the entire button assembly and you’ll get the click function back (but no Touch ID)
• If Touch ID is important to you and it’s currently working, we’ll be very careful with screen repairs to preserve it

We’ll explain this before starting any repair that might affect Touch ID. This is security by design from Apple—annoying but intentional.

iPad Camera Repair

Rear camera blurry or not focusing? Front camera (FaceTime camera) showing black screen or distorted image? Camera app crashing?

We repair or replace iPad cameras on all models. This includes:

iPad cameras aren’t as critical as iPhone cameras for most people, but if you use your iPad for FaceTime, Zoom calls, or document scanning, working cameras matter.

iPad Performance Issues & Diagnostics

Sometimes it’s hardware. Sometimes it’s software. Sometimes it’s just age.

• Assess if the iPad is simply too old for current iPadOS

We won’t charge you for hardware repairs when the problem is software. If your iPad just needs a factory reset or iPadOS update, we’ll tell you that instead of selling you a battery or other unnecessary repair.

iPad Water Damage Repair

Spilled coffee on it? Dropped in the bath? Left outside in the rain?

iPads aren’t water resistant. Even the newest iPad Pro has no official IP rating. Liquid and iPads don’t mix well.

Water damage needs immediate action. Don’t try to charge it. Don’t turn it on. Don’t put it in rice (doesn’t work). Just bring it in immediately.

We’ll open it up, assess damage, clean corrosion if caught early, and tell you honestly if recovery is possible and what it’ll cost.

iPad water damage success rates are lower than phones because of the larger size and more complex internals. We’ll be honest about your chances before you spend money on diagnostic and attempted repair.

When iPad Repair Doesn’t Make Sense

We’ll tell you honestly when replacement is smarter than repair.

If your iPad is 6+ years old and needs expensive screen repair (£200+), replacement usually makes more financial sense. You can buy a refurbished newer iPad for similar money that’ll last longer and run current software better.

If your iPad is already struggling with performance and you need to repair the screen, consider whether you’re just delaying inevitable replacement. Sometimes spending £180 on screen repair for a slow, aging iPad just means you’ll need to replace it in six months anyway.

If repair cost exceeds 70% of replacement cost for an equivalent iPad, replacement is usually smarter.

We make more money if you repair with us. But we’d rather give you honest advice and have you come back when you actually need repair services than sell you a repair that doesn’t make financial sense.

iPad Pro vs iPad Air vs Standard iPad – Repair Reality

iPad Pro repairs are expensive. Larger screens, premium components, complex Face ID systems, multi-camera arrays—everything costs more. A 12.9″ iPad Pro screen can cost as much as the entire iPad was worth three years ago.

iPad Air repairs are mid-range pricing. Newer models (Air 4+) have laminated screens so they’re not cheap, but they’re more reasonable than Pro models.

Standard iPad repairs are most affordable. Basic iPads (9th gen, 10th gen) have the cheapest repair costs. Parts are readily available and prices are reasonable.

iPad mini repairs are surprisingly expensive given the size. Small parts can be fiddly to work with, and Apple charges premium prices for mini components despite the smaller screen.

Apple Official Repair vs Independent Repair for iPads

Apple official repair (Apple Store or AASP) uses genuine Apple parts but costs significantly more.

Nearest Apple Store is Leeds (45 minutes away). AASPs exist in York and Hull but still require appointments and longer waits. You’ll pay premium prices but get genuine parts and warranty preservation if your iPad is still under AppleCare+.

Independent repair (us) costs 30-60% less using quality aftermarket parts.

For out-of-warranty iPads (most devices over a year old), independent repair provides excellent value. You save significant money, get same-day service, and we use quality parts with solid warranties.

For iPads under AppleCare+, use Apple repair. Don’t void coverage when Apple will fix it for £49 or whatever the AppleCare+ excess is.

For out-of-warranty iPads, we’re usually the smarter financial choice.

iPadOS Support Timeline – When Old iPads Stop Getting Updates

This matters for repair decisions.

iPads typically get 5-7 years of iPadOS updates. After that, they still work but don’t receive new features or security updates.

As of 2026:

• iPad Air 2 and older: No longer supported
• iPad 5th gen and older: No longer supported
• iPad mini 4 and older: No longer supported

If your iPad is no longer receiving iPadOS updates and needs expensive repair, replacement usually makes more sense. You’re repairing a device that’s becoming obsolete.

If your iPad is still receiving updates (generally 2019 or newer models), repair makes sense if the repair cost is reasonable relative to the iPad’s value.
