Phone Not Charging? It’s Probably Just Pocket Fluff
99% of “my phone won’t charge” problems are just dirt in the charging port.

Common Signs You Need Charging Port Repair
Cable falls out easily
Charges only when held
No charging at all
Slow charging suddenly
Debris visible in port
Phone Only Charges at an Angle
This is the most obvious sign, your cable has to be at an exact angle for the phone to charge or even wrapped around it with a hairband !
How much to fix charging port UK
We charge £10 for a deep clean and debris removing service. Takes around 10 minutes. As a BONUS service we alos clean the tiny holes left and right of the port which is where your speaker and microphone are – people will be able to hear you better !
Phone Not Charging? It's Probably Just Pocket Fluff
99% of "my phone won't charge" problems are just dirt in the charging port.
Every customer tells me they've checked. They've cleaned it out. They've looked.
They haven't.
I've been fixing phones in Market Weighton for 10 years and I can count on one hand the number of charging ports we've actually replaced. The rest? Pocket lint, dust, and debris compacted so tight it stops the cable connecting properly.
You've got two options:
DIY it yourself (takes patience, fine tweezers, and decent light)
Pop in to Market Weighton for £10 and I'll deep clean it properly in 10 minutes while you wait
Both work. One's faster and you're guaranteed it's done properly.
The DIY Method (If You Want to Try Yourself)
What you need:
Fine-tipped tweezers (long, thin, pointy ones - not the wide cosmetic ones)
Good lighting (your phone torch works)
Patience
Gentle touch
How to clean your charging port:
Turn your phone off (I never do this but you should - you're poking metal into electrical contacts)
Hold phone firmly and look inside the port with a torch
You'll probably see compacted lint or debris
If you're a farmer or mechanic, might be soil or metal filings
Office workers get pocket fluff
Everyone gets dust
Gently scrape with tweezers
Poke tweezers into port
Scrape gently to bottom and into all corners
Feel for dirt and debris (it'll be there)
Don't force it - be gentle
Tap phone on surface
Debris should fall out
Repeat scraping and tapping until it feels clean
Test with charger
Cable should insert fully and feel solid
Should "click" in and stay put
If still loose, repeat cleaning
That's it. That's the fix.
If you've cleaned it properly and cable now sits firmly in the port, job done.
Before You Start Cleaning (Important Stuff)
Try these first - might save you cleaning altogether:
Check Your Cable and Charger
Try a different cable (cables fail more than ports)
Try a different plug adapter
Try a different wall socket
Remove your phone case (some block the cable)
If a different cable works, your cable was knackered. Replace it.
Restart Your Phone
Sounds daft for a physical problem, but software glitches can stop charging.
Turn phone off completely
Wait 10 seconds
Turn back on
Try charging again
If that fixed it, brilliant. If not, it's probably the port that needs cleaning.
What NOT to Do (Don't Be Daft)
❌ Don't use metal pins, needles, or paper clips - you'll bend the delicate pins inside or short circuit something
❌ Don't blow into the port - your breath has moisture that causes corrosion
❌ Don't force anything - ports are delicate, gentle is the way
❌ Don't use cotton buds - leave fibres behind that make it worse
When to Just Bring It In (£10 Deep Clean)
Look, you can try cleaning it yourself, but here's when the £10 option makes more sense:
You Should Just Pop In If:
✅ You're in Market Weighton, Pocklington, Beverley, or South Cave anyway (we're easy to reach)
✅ You don't have the right tweezers or can't see clearly into the port
✅ You've tried cleaning it but cable still won't stay in
✅ You can't be arsed spending 20 minutes faffing with tweezers
✅ You want it done properly with proper tools
✅ Your phone is worth more than the 10 minutes you'll waste trying
£10 Deep Clean Includes:
Proper inspection with magnification
Professional cleaning with correct tools
Port tested after cleaning
Confirmation it's actually working properly
Done in 10 minutes while you wait
Honestly? Most people who try DIY cleaning either:
Don't get all the debris out (it's compacted deeper than you think)
Can't see properly what they're doing
Give up after 5 minutes and bring it in anyway
Accidentally bend something because they forced it
For a tenner, I'll do it properly and you know it's done right.
Signs You Need More Than Just Cleaning
Bring it straight in (not just cleaning, needs diagnosis) if:
🚨 Port feels very loose or wobbly
🚨 You can see bent or broken pins inside
🚨 There's green/white crusty stuff (corrosion from water damage)
🚨 Phone gets hot when trying to charge
🚨 Burning smell when plugged in
🚨 Cable falls out constantly even after cleaning
These aren't cleaning issues - they're actual faults that need looking at.
£25 diagnosis - I'll tell you what's actually wrong and what it'll cost to fix. If it's just cleaning, I'll do that for £10 instead.
What Usually Happens (Real Talk)
90% of people who come in saying "I think I need a new charging port":
Have a port full of compacted pocket lint
I clean it out in 5 minutes
Cable now fits perfectly
Phone charges normally
£10, job done
That's it. That's the whole repair.
I've literally never seen a port that was actually broken beyond repair. They either need cleaning (99%) or the pins are slightly bent (1%), which I can usually fix.
Charging port replacement? We don't do them. Because we don't need to. It's always just dirt.
Prevention (So This Doesn't Happen Again)
Simple habits to keep your port clean:
Don't keep phone in linty pockets (especially trouser front pockets)
Clean port every few months with compressed air
Pull cable out gently by the plug, not the cord
Use decent quality cables (cheap ones break and shed debris)
If you work in dusty environments, consider a port cover plug
For farmers, mechanics, builders in Market Weighton area:
You're going to get debris in there faster than office workers. Either clean it more often or just pop in quarterly for a £10 deep clean. Cheaper than a new phone.
Your Two Options (Final Decision)
Option 1: DIY Cleaning
Cost: £0 (if you have tweezers)
Time: 10-20 minutes of faffing
Success rate: 70% (if you're patient and thorough)
Downside: Might not get all debris, might give up, might accidentally damage something
Option 2: £10 Deep Clean in Market Weighton
Cost: £10
Time: 10 minutes while you wait
Success rate: 99% (I've done this thousands of times)
Upside: Done properly, guaranteed working, you can grab a coffee while you wait
From Pocklington? 12 minutes to Market Weighton.
From Beverley? 15-20 minutes.
From South Cave? 20 minutes.
Worth the drive? For a tenner and 10 minutes to have it sorted properly, absolutely.

Charging Port FAQ
Why is my phone only charging when I hold the cable at an angle?
This usually means the charging port is worn, loose, or blocked with debris. In many cases, a professional clean fixes it, but if the pins are damaged, a port replacement is needed.
How do I know if my charging port is broken or just dirty?
If your phone charges intermittently or only with certain cables, it may just need cleaning. If it won’t charge at all or feels loose, the port is likely damaged and needs repair.
Can a phone charging port be repaired or does it need replacing?
Charging ports are usually replaced rather than repaired. This ensures a reliable connection and prevents further issues.
How much does charging port repair cost in Hull and East Yorkshire?
Charging port repair typically costs between £40 and £110 depending on the phone model. iPhones and newer devices may be higher.
How long does a charging port repair take?
Most charging port repairs can be completed the same day, often within 1–2 hours depending on the device.
Is it safe to use a damaged charging port?
No — a damaged port can cause overheating, further internal damage, or charging failure. It’s best to get it checked quickly.
Can I clean my charging port myself?
You can try gently removing dust with a wooden toothpick or compressed air, but avoid metal objects as they can damage the pins.
Why does my phone say it’s charging but the battery goes down?
This usually indicates a faulty charging port or battery issue. The phone is not receiving enough power through the connection.
Do I need a new battery or a charging port repair?
If your phone charges inconsistently or only when positioned a certain way, it’s usually the charging port, not the battery.
Do you offer same-day charging port repair in Hull?
Yes — most charging port repairs can be done within 10 minutes by appointment, depending on the device.
What if it’s not just dirt?
Then I’ll tell you what it actually is. £25 diagnosis covers looking at the actual problem. If it’s just cleaning, that’s £10. If it’s something else, I’ll quote you properly.
Will this wipe my data?
No. Cleaning a port doesn’t touch anything inside the phone. Your data is fine.
What if I’ve already tried cleaning it?
Bring it in anyway. You probably didn’t get all the debris out. I have better tools and magnification.
