This week we repaired an Xbox Series X Power Supply Unit (PSU)
What fault it had
The customer had a power cut at home and as the Xbox Series X was being used at the time the sudden loss of power stopped it working.
Where was the customer from ?
A local customer from Market Weighton
How did we diagnose it ?
We took the XBox Series X apart as the PSU is attached by about 20 varying screws and connects vis 2 cables under a metal plate into the main board. After we’d taken it out we used a multimeter on the output cables after plugging it into a wall plug. It should read 12v across the black and grey wires. It didn’t so we knew it was faulty.
What was the repair outcome ?
A fully working console the day after diagnosis.
We agreed the repair with the customer and ordered the part to come next day, we ordered an origianal Xbox Psu and it was then fitted. Prior to fitting it we fully cleaned the Xbox internally of all dirt and debris, which is common in all game devices we get aAll put back together and tested as working on our monitor.
Also a LESSON LEARNED, we have had a few power cuts locally recently and this customer has ordered a surge protector for his device. A surge protector sits between the household electrics and another device as a buffer and takes the impact in a power outage saving connected devices from spikes in electricity. And I would recommend taking his advice as consle power supplies whilst normally isolated only to internal PSU components, can if you are unlucky send the power past to the board itself and kill the board. This customer was lucky. But he’s making a good choice. Have a think about it.
WHat are the symptoms of a faulty power supply in a console ?
A Dead machine, will not do anything when plugged into a power supply, no fan noise, no gentle hum, no beeps when you press the power button.
